Stuart Alderman has been practicing architecture since 1978 (over 45 years) and has been preparing for his avocation since he was 7. A career changing event was his attendance at Expo 67 in Montreal where he experienced: Habitat 67 (Moshe Safdie) Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic USA pavilion and the rubber-tired Montreal Subways!!
After attending the Summer Program in Architecture for High School Students at Cornell University in 1972 he attended Syracuse University and earned his B. Arch in 1978.
After working at various firms in Dallas, Texas he ended up in Syracuse, NY as the lead designer (and principal in charge of design) for a large firm that designed retail/office/urban design around the Northeastern US. Several of his projects were awarded AIA design awards.
A year after he moved to Austin, Texas in 1993, He founded a firm (Block 16 Architects) that spent the next 28 years designing an impressive and diverse project portfolio in Texas, Upstate NY and the Bay Area of California. These types include Multi-family, Retail, Office, Senior’s housing, Single family Houses, Mixed use, Industrial, Churches, Non-profits, Auto Sales/Service, Veterinary/Medical/Dental offices, Urban Design, Site and Master Planning as well as other categories.
He then sold his interest in Block 16 Architects to SKB Architecture and Design in 2022. Mr. Alderman is now a principal with his new venture: Stuart M. Alderman AIA, Architect and brings his extensive experience to bear on the firm’s residential and small commercial focus. He is licensed in several states including, notably: Texas, New York, California, Florida, Hawaii, Washington, and Idaho. He is NCARB certified and a member of the American Institute of Architects.
He has travelled extensively throughout much of Europe as well as Japan and Central/South America.
He is a student of Cities.
He plays full court basketball 3 times a week and lives with his wife, 2 cats and a dog.
His little-known fact: He is in a race to the death (including a spread-sheet) with one of his oldest friends to see who will get to the most airports before they expire. He is currently winning with 97.
